June 2009: Rail Road MP3s, Minami-NagareYama, Japan

Back in 2006, I had my cellphone snatched from my pocket on a train platform in Sri Lanka. When sufficient time has passed for me to see the funny side of that event, I thought if I were to play a sound track when I was running after the f**king thieves, it must have been the theme from Indianna Jones.

BBC World Service used to run a program called "Desert Island Discs" where celebrities talk about what records they world bring to a desert island. Maybe BBS WS still do. Anyway, here's my idea of a sound track for this journey. So here are the Rail Road MP3s.

My Little Baby
My Little Baby

雨水沾濕了翅膀,卻讓花香更清明;

尋找前世的蝴蝶,在夢的觸鬚中成了人;

April, 2009: Sentosa, Singapore to Tanjong Pagar Railway Station, Malaysia

Every journey, they say, has a beginning.

And if your journey is a train trip from the Southernmost point of continental Asia to the Northernmost in Europe, your beginning starts here in the resort island of Sentosa. Sentosa proudly proclaim one of its southern outcrop as "THE Southernmost Point Continent Asia". The cockiness of it all can be seen by the phallic symbol to choose to make this proclamation:
Our northern neighbors in Malaysia may not agree to that, especially the people of Johor Bahru. But by virture of a suspension bridge that link the outcrop to Sentosa, another bridge that link Sentosa to mainland Singapore, followed by the Causeway that links Singapore to JB, Singapore now has a claim to this southernmost point:
From Sentosa you can take the monorail out of the island into Singapore. The train stops in a mall. Exit from the mall, turn right and just keep walking along the main Keppel Road. This would bring you to the Tanjong Pagar Railway Station:The railway station sits on land currently owned by KTM, Malaysia Railway. That probably implies this little piece of Singapore is owned by Malaysia. The last time I took a train from here into Malaysia, I handed my passport to Malaysia custom officer before I show it later on in the trip to a Singapore custom officer. The KTM train can take you all the way up north across the border into Kuala Lumpur. From KL, move north to Penang, then cross into Hyataai in Thailand. After that, the Thailand Railway will take over.

They may take you somewhere near the Cambodia border, but until the Thai-Cambodia temple dispute has been settled, there may be no way for either the Thailand or Cambodia Railway to take you into Cambodia. Even that, the Cambodian would have to get their act together and start laying their part of the Singapore-Nanning railway. If they do and when they do, you can cross by railroad from Combodia into Vietnam. The Vietnam Railway Unification Express will bring you from southern HCM City to Hanoi. After which it will be a short trip into Nanning, ChinaWell, we can only hope.

January 2009, Shanghai, China

One night in Shanghai and a quick walkabout in the morning. I would think the Bund has been over-rated. But that's just me. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I was staying in the older and more run-down section of the bustling metropolis.

Anyway the main reason to fly home out of Shanghai was to experience the Maglev train running between the Pudong airport and the city.

January 2009, Vladivostok, Russia to Shanghai, China

After a brief 3 days stay in Russia, it is time to head back in to China. One night rest in freezing Harbin and it is southwards to Shanghai. As the Harbin-Shanghai train move southwards, the scenery outside the window tells you that you are definitely moving towards warmer climate.

January 2009, Vladivostok Russia

By the time we reach Vladivostok it was dark and we heard the Russian were celebrating the New Year of 2009. However, the Chinese guide weren't willing to allow us to venture out in town on our own. Instead, he would rather we go with him to a casino. The Chinese tourists seems to come here for four reasons:
1) to witness how poor their 'lazy' Russian neighbor still is (which is weird really, seeing that during our time there, part of Eastern and Western Europe were shivering in the cold simply because Russia decided to turn off their natural gas supply);
2) To visit the casino for abit of punting, Macau being the only place in China that one may legally go to a casino. But for many of the northeastern folks in the tour group, Macau is too damned south;
3) To visit a blonde Russia 'working-lady';
4)Take in the sights, take pictures and maybe buy some duty free stuff.

Here then are some of the sights. The Russian has just celebrated their New Year and is about to celebrate the Eastern Othordox Christmas on 7 July. This is a Navy base of the Russian Far East fleet, and also the starting point of the great Trans-Siberia railway. The Vladivostok Railway station looks pretty low-key though.

January 2009, Grodyekovo to Vladivostok Russia

After clearing the custom at the border control next to the railway station, and some waiting, we finally get on the bus that will take us to the city/town of Vladivostok. The view outside the bus window was bleak and barren. But the trip was less uneventful. The bus broke down along the way, in the middle of nowhere, in the depth of winter, on the far east of Russia, with the Siberia wind blowing. And right outside what looks like a Russia army firing zone.
