January 2009, Vladivostok Russia

By the time we reach Vladivostok it was dark and we heard the Russian were celebrating the New Year of 2009. However, the Chinese guide weren't willing to allow us to venture out in town on our own. Instead, he would rather we go with him to a casino. The Chinese tourists seems to come here for four reasons:
1) to witness how poor their 'lazy' Russian neighbor still is (which is weird really, seeing that during our time there, part of Eastern and Western Europe were shivering in the cold simply because Russia decided to turn off their natural gas supply);
2) To visit the casino for abit of punting, Macau being the only place in China that one may legally go to a casino. But for many of the northeastern folks in the tour group, Macau is too damned south;
3) To visit a blonde Russia 'working-lady';
4)Take in the sights, take pictures and maybe buy some duty free stuff.

Here then are some of the sights. The Russian has just celebrated their New Year and is about to celebrate the Eastern Othordox Christmas on 7 July. This is a Navy base of the Russian Far East fleet, and also the starting point of the great Trans-Siberia railway. The Vladivostok Railway station looks pretty low-key though.
