July, 2009: To Sapporo on the night train Akebono

All packed up and ready to leave the Hippo House. After packing up six weeks worth of "junk" and dumping it at a Singaporean friend's place, it was time to head out to Hokkaido again.

Instead of leaving early on the earliest train out on a Saturday morning, this trip could be done on a night train from Ueno to Aomori. This I found out from the JR staff at the reservation window. The Akebono didn't show up readily on the time table book, because I was looking at all the wrong places.
I assume any night travel towards Hokkaido would be running along the east coast. The Akebono, however, runs nearer along the west coast, heading towards Akita before turning for her destination in Aomori. All in good time to catch a morning train to crossing the strait for Hokkaido.
The Akebono sounds like the name of a sumo wrestler. If you get hit by a running train, it may sound like an appropriate name for train and wrestler. But in fact, Akebono means day-break. Get yourself settle into the comfort of the bed on the train, wake up to the annoucement that the train is arriving in Akita, and you will agree it's just the right name for the night train Akebono.

Unlike the Cassiopea and Hokusosei, there is no extra charges for a bed on the Akebono. This is for bed with only the privacy of a draw curtain. I guess for an extra charge, one can get bed in a private room.
